What is mig welding
Mig welding is an arc welding process that utilizes a solid wire fed through a welding gun into a weld pool.
Advantages of mig welding
- Speed. When compared to tig welding or stick welding, mig welding is substantially faster while still providing a strong weld.
- Inexpensive. Mig welding is fast than other forms of welding so the labor cost is significantly lower. Mig welding consumables are also fairly inexpensive.
- Flexible. Mig welding is very flexible in that it can be used to weld various types of metals including mild steel, aluminum, copper and stainless steel.
- Strength. A properly setup mig welder in the hands of a certified welder produces some of the strongest welds possible.
- Material Thickness Limitations. A mig welder can handle thicknesses up to multiple inches. The only limiting factor is the size of the machine. Larger more powerful machines can weld thicker material in a single pass where as smaller machines require additional passes to mig weld the same material.
