What is tig welding

Tig welding is an arc welding process where the arc is formed between a pointed tungsten rod that is manually applied and the workpiece. Because tig welding does not rely on the tungsten rod as filler material, it provides cleaner higher quality precision welds.

Advantages of tig welding

  • Precision. Tig welding put more control of the welding process into the hands of the person doing the welding. With tig welding, the welder controls the heat more precisely that with stick or mig welding. Since tig welding does not rely on the tungsten tip to fill the weld, the operator can weld at a more controlled pace without worrying about the wire feed speed like in mig welding.
  • Thin Material. Thin material is where tig welding really excels. Due to the fact that the person doing the welding has complete control over the heat and the filler, he or she can manipulate the weld to avoid burning through the thinner material.
  • Asthetics. The increased control over the weld pool while tig welding vs mig welding allows for a cleaner and more even weld.
